Running: 14 May 2011 - Playing Catch Up

G'day all,

I'm still trying to get back into the swing of things with running and blogging.  Let me catch everyone up on this past week.  I ran only twice this week due to rain.  Gotta love Iowa weather.  90 plus on one day and humid as hell, then rainy and cold the next.  It's been said, 'if you don't like Iowa weather, wait 5 minutes and it'll change.'

I ran 4.4 miles on Monday the 9th in about 43 minutes.  It was humid and roughly 74 degrees even at 6:30 am.  Needless to say, sweat was the "bull market" equivalent of a great day on the NYSE.  This run took me from home to the Middle School, past the High School, down 8th Avenue and west down Summit, then back north on 16th to the west bypass and back south down John Wayne drive to our alley and home.  I did come to small conclusion, that while running on the left lane of traffic DOES make you a little more visible to oncoming traffic, one tends to get a lot of road spray as vehicles roar past kicking up any and all water left on the road after a night of rain.  :(

Thursday's run was a little longer at about 5.83 miles in 49:10 minutes.  Here, I made my way from home to 4th Avenue and out onto the west bypass.  The day was dryer and cooler than the one on Tuesday.  I took the bypass around to west Summit and down to 1st Avenue and home.  Blood sugar and pulse have been in the decent ranges for most of my runs.  I am getting my pulse up to around 176 (max) and sustaining it for a good 15-25 minutes.  That will really help with the cardio.  I have noticed as well, that my breathing has become less...labored if you will.  What seems to be dragging me down is my legs.  God, do they seem heavy.  I suppose some light weight training might help.

Speaking of blood sugars, there were a couple days where my morning blood sugar was below 60.  Not an acceptable level to run.  We have been out of Performance lately too.  It is great for getting the sugars up and then giving me the sustained energy to run.  I need to figure out a good way to carry some with me during Dam to Dam.

That's about it for now.  I need to post another run blog...
See ya in a few.
