Running: 31 Aug 2010 - A Nice Day for a Wet Running

I tried to check the weather on my phone before setting out and got a communication error.  I guess I should have known it was going to rain.  It was humid as all get out...and starting to get hot.  But I dressed anyway and headed for Car Quest.  I decided to take a slightly different route this morning, shooting for about 4 miles.  So, earbuds in, music from the 80's pumping away, off I went.

From Car Quest, I headed north toward the highway, then hung a right.  It's about a mile or so to Norwood Street where I made the turn south, and felt the first hints of rain.  At first, I wasn't sure it was rain, but the lightning and thunder quickly quelled that thought.

Now, I don't know if any of you readers are farm kids who might have grown up around cattle, but here is what ran through my mind.  You see, when a female bovine (cow) pees the stuff splatters everywhere.  As the rain began to fall, it felt like I was just out of splatter range catching drops here and there.  Within a minute, it felt as though I was just about at cow pee ground zero. The rain came...harder and harder.  It was washing the sweat down into my eyes and making it hard to keep the earbuds in.  What else could I do but keep on running?

Then I noticed the song on my MP3 player:  Billy Idol's "White Wedding".  Here is where the title of today's post came from.  It had been a few days since I last ran, so "It's a nice day to start again" seemed to fit.  And as he came to "It's a nice day for a white wedding" that became 'It's a nice day for a wet running' - and it was a wet running.  The funny thing was as the song built through the middle, so did the rain.  And as the song approached its completion and started winding down...so did the rain.  Hmmm, suppose God likes Billy Idol?  I don't know...but I was soaked when the song was over.

My return down 10th Street to Car Quest brought the ususal fartleks (which I might add are getting longer).  When all was said and done, I had covered 3.39 miles in 27:16.  Not quite the 4 miles I was shooting for, but was enough.  So, thanks to Billy Idol, a bit of rain, and images of cows peeing in pastures, I'll bring today's run and blog to a close.
