Running: 24 July 2010: Hope 5k (24:01)

Sorry this is a late posting, but I've been a bit busy.  Saturday's 5k run was up in West Des Moines and like I've said, was a fund raiser for Hope Lutheran Church.  My brother Andy and I both ran.  I hadn't planned on running a race this weekend, but since it was for charity and my brother was going to run, I did it anyway.  I would say there were about 300 or so runners.  We positioned ourselves about  mid-pack and waited for the start.  The weather was a bit overcast, about 76 degrees, and of course - humid.

At promptly 8am, the race started.  The course was rather nice.  It ran through some residential areas and down by Jordan Creek Mall and finished back at the church.  I think at the 1 mile mark I was on a 7:15 or 7:30 pace.  I did some quick ciphering and came up with about 22:00 to 24:00 minutes at the finish line.  I figured that wouldn't be too bad.  I'm not exactly sure where I lost Andy, but I must have pulled ahead on the first big down hill.  I caught sight of him again as we clover-leafed through a couple underpasses.  There were a couple longer hills on this route.  I remember the last one being a bit of a bugger.  I knew exactly where I was and downshifted a bit and grunted it out.  Top of the hill was a right hand turn back toward the church.  Then a left into the parking lot and finishing chute.

I wanted to finish hard the last 50 meters or so, so I picked up the ten-ton tootsies and made for the finish line.  I saw the clock approaching 24:00 and ran even faster.  From what I could tell from my watch and the race clock, I hit the finish somewhere between 23: 58 and 24:05.  Either way, that was a personal best and almost two and a half minutes faster than the Earlham 5k (26:22).  Blood sugar 61 after the run and pulse 136 five minutes after finishing.  When I get the offical results, I'll post my time.  Official time was 24:01.

Have a great day, all....
myk
