The first part of the event started with us weighing in. I weighed in at 162.2. That meant I would have to bench press 145 (90% of my weight at my age division). I decided I would like to get it over with so I could rest and concentrate on the run, so I went first. One quick side note here: pump and runs draw 2 classes of athletes - bulldogs and greyhounds. The bulldogs tend to crank out a gadzillion reps, and run the shorter race (1 mile today). The greyhounds might pump a few reps then run, or just run. We had both kinds today (and a mix of the two, if I might add). I think one of the overall winners had 40+ reps at 165 pounds, ran the mile in 6 and change and wound up with a negative adjusted time. It's a weird thing. Anyway, like I said, I went first. The football boys put 145 on the bar and I laid down on the bench. I really only intended to do 10 reps, but fell just shy of 15 when all was said and done - 14. That would adjust my time by 210 seconds (3.5 minutes).
The run was actually part of my regular Wednesday runs with the Madison County Milers. Starting at Monumental Park, we went east on Court to the U-turn, once around the upper part of the City Park and back to Monumental Park. I had noted a couple days ago, that I was the only entrant at that time. Well, today there were two of us. No, it wasn't Mike Wells (he just did the 5k). It was a guy from Des Moines. A runner. Dammit. Oh well. I kept him in sight as long as I could. He finished about 3 minutes ahead of me. As I have said before, at this point, I am not out to win...just finish. I am happy with 2nd (even if there were only two of us). My finish time was 21:58 (18:28 adjusted). IF the distance was a 5k, then I posted a personal best. Either way, I got a good run in this morning.
I think Jordan did 6 reps at 70 pounds. He was the only 5k entrant in the the 14 and under P&R. He was tired, although he looked better today after the race than our first 5k. He wasn't happy with his time and has vowed to get better. We both plan to run the Holliwell Covered Bridge race during the Bridge Festival. I believe it's a 5.6k...better get running.
myk
