Well, I did not get up this morning and am kinda kicking myself for not doing so. It was gorgeous out too. Part of the reason is I was low. When I woke up at the prescribed running time, my blood sugar was 56. And with timing being everything, by the time I would have eaten something and gotten the blood sugar back to a decent range to exercise, I would have been out of time to run. Plus, I would have had food in my gut, and after last Saturday and almost spilling my cereal, I wasn't going to take the chance. Ahhhh, living with Diabetes...
That's another thing I will have to take into consideration. With exercise being so important to those living with a condition such as Diabetes, insulin consumption needs to be more closely monitored. I will probably have to adjust my basal rates on my pump and check my blood sugar a little more frequently until I get used to the long term residual effects of exercise again.
Jeff, if you read this today, what do you recommend as a quick blood sugar boost that won't turn to possible road spillage based on my situation this morning? ~Thx, myk
Well, I'll try to get out tonight and run before bed after the heat dwindles a bit. And maybe I'll run under the full moon tomorrow night in Cedar Rapids where I will be for Jordan's baseball tournament...
Later kids,
myk
Clif shot blocks or gel, Gu, or Accel Gel. Accel had a 4:1 carb to protein (may keep you from spiking your blood sugar as much)and the others are straight carbs. All are used in running and are designed to take while running especially for longer distances 13.1m and above. With your running you may find that you will have to cut your basal rate on your pump. As far as what gel do I rec? It's a taste preference for the most part. Clif is known for its organic products. I like Clif Mocha, Gu Roctane orange vanilla, Gu expresso love. There are a ton of flavors available.
ReplyDeleteOk, so maybe having a family member in medicine AND with a running affliction/obsession/habit might NOT be all that bad...lol...thanks a ton, Jeff. Maybe you should come do one of America's Premier 20K Road Races next June and do the Dam-to-Dam with me.
ReplyDeleteI would love to run with you! We will plan it.
ReplyDeleteAwesome!
